Temperament

Published by sshield at 2:52 pm under Uncategorized Edit This

The book gives an example of a brother and sister and how their temperament varies greatly between the two. This reminds me of my brother and me. He is 5 years older and was a much more active baby always getting into stuff and/or getting hurt and I on the other hand was very quiet and just sat back and watched him get in all the trouble. Temperament is defined as patterns of arousal and emotionality that are consistent and enduring characteristics of an individual. Despite what many people may think temperament is not a permanent characteristic that a child may possess. Temperament can be changed and modified according to how the children are raised. Babies can basically be separated into 4 different temperament levels; easy baby, difficult baby, slow to warm baby and 35% can not be categorized. Easy babies are have a positive disposition and are adapted to most situations, these babies account for 40% of infants. Difficult babies are more negative and do not favor new situations, these babies account for 10% of infants. Finally there are slow to warm babies who are inactive and are calm in new situations but are slow to adapt, these babies are about 15% of infants. Babies are products of their environments and it is important to make environments positive and nurturing.
