The social aspects of play
As a child and for some as an adult play is a very important part of life. Play is a great way to socialize young children. There is more to playing than many people may think and there are many different ways to play. A parent may walk into the classroom and see their child sitting there playing with some toys next to another child but they are not interacting and the parent thinks there child is being a loner. In reality this is not true the two are engaged in parallel play. This is popular in early preschool years. The two children are playing with similar toys in similar ways and learning from one another. A more passive type of play is the onlooker play. This is where a child will watch others play but not interact with them. As preschoolers get older they will interact in associative play. This is where two or more children interact by sharing and borrowing toys although they are not playing the same thing. The other type is cooperative play. This is the type of play we think about when we think of playing. This is where children interact with one another while doing such things as taking turns, playing games or using contest as a type of play. As children grow so does their way of playing so it is important to allow children the time to discover play time.
